What is Container Glass? Is it container glass or is it OTHER glass?

A common question asked by people is, "What's the difference between glass used for bottles and jars and glass used for other applications?"

The list below explains the various types of commercial glasses and their applications:

Glass Type Applications

Soda-Lime Glass Container glass, windows and tableware

Lead Glass Decorative and optical effects, i.e. crystal glass

Borosilicate Glass Scientific work i.e. Lab glasses

Glass Ceramic Cook-serve-freeze utensils

Fiberglass Insulation, textiles and reinforcing

Special Glasses Safety, laminated and tempered glass, photosensitive glass and special chemical and industrial glass

Although most of the glass produced throughout the world is made from silica sand, soda ash and limestone, there are physical variances among the different types of commercial glass produced. Container glass has a specific glass formulation that is different from all other types of glass. As a result, only container glass can be used when recycling it back into new glass containers.

In some recycling programmes in Canada, people mistakenly put window glass, drinking glass, crystal, laboratory glass and other glass in a container glass recycling programme. These are contaminants that cause quality problems for processors and add unnecessary cost to recycling programme operators. Consumers Glass, Canada's only manufacturer, hopes that the information provided on this site will help Canadians understand how to eliminate these problems and make container glass recycling a sustainable process.
