Last year The Beer Store was recognized by the Recycling Council of Ontario for seven decades of recovering beer bottles for refill. It is a discretionary award presented "in recognition of the most significant overall achievement in the areas of waste reduction, re-use and recycling."
The Beer Store has evolved a very special system for closing the loop. While all bottles ultimately should be recycled in order to close the larger loop, Brewers Retail has created a smaller closed loop that demonstrates its approach to stewardship.
Additionally Ontario's 429 Beer Stores have successfully achieved certification under Canada's Environmental Choice Program.
"We want to build on this and encourage customers to help return even more materials. We are committed to recovering 100 per cent of the packaging we use." The support for stewardship was voiced by Jan Westcott, Executive Director of The Brewers of Ontario.

Some of the factors include:
Ultimately all glass containers can be recycled. Making this happen requires a team effort; everyone in the system must help to optimize the return of glass over and over and over...
