Doug's Page: A Balancing Act - Environment and Business

Get a good grip. Keep your head down. Keep your left arm straight.

As you shift your weight from side to side to check for good balance, think about your timing. Make sure you have a good follow through.

These are the top five elements I have to continuously work on when practicing the fine art of golf. Just as golf is a life time commitment to continuously improving the swing, finding a balance between doing what's best for the environment and for our shareholders, is an activity we have not perfected yet as Mother Nature pointed out. We are not alone in this position.

Consumers Glass environmental policy states that it recognizes environmental management as among the highest corporate priorities and as a key determinant to sustainable development. It is easy to define using the Brundtland Commission's one liner but sustainability has yet to be achieved by anyone. It is as elusive as the perfect golf score.

Certainly there are actions we have taken which we can look at as eagles . For example, the Annual Conservation Video Contest, has produced top notch ideas by Canadian students. Having Glass Works on the Internet enables us to share information with an unlimited number of visitors. We get feedback from all over the world. We have accepted the use of post-consumer, post-use recycled glass as a major raw material in the remanufacuring of container glass. This was made possible because of the partnering efforts of stakeholders, including processors, recycling operators, municipalities, and householders, an eagle accomplishment. However, many challenges still exist, and eagles are all too rare. Sustainability, in my opinion, is a way off, the course ahead is loaded with sand traps, water hazards and a lot of rough. It will take the combined and concentrated efforts of each Canadian to make the recycling of container glass a sustainable activity.

In golf, success begins with the choice of the right club. I believe we made a good choice by promoting recycling through education. We need to keep working together to achieve more eagles. I invite you to share ideas.
