6. Alternate Markets and the Idea Centre
Three years ago www.glassworks.org started a forum that interested parties can access at their convenience to share or seek information related to container glass, its associated supply chain and multi-material recycling in Canada. Innovative ideas for alternate uses for container glass material can be shared amongst municipalities, recycling coordinators, entrepreneurs, students - whomever chooses to share is welcome to post an idea. Enter the Idea Centre.
Where does Consumers Glass stand today with its Product Stewardship process?
Consumers Glass will continue to buy cullet from its four primary glass processors across Canada, to be used as a consistent ingredient in the batch mix for the production of new glass containers. The ability for Consumers Glass to buy cullet from its suppliers, as always, is dependent in turn on the demand for glass containers by its customers, who largely determine in what region the glass containers are to be manufactured.
What affect does the change in production of green glass have on Ontario?
It means that alternate markets for green are needed and needed NOW. It does not mean that if Consumers Glass does not offer a market for green cullet in Ontario that recycling container glass cannot continue.

What will the impact be on the Ontario market?
www.glassworks.org recognizes that this will change the economics of the Blue Box for Ontario as it would for any other region. Exactly what the change will be is a function of how stakeholders in the glass supply chain and curbside multi-material recycling systems react.
There are three key issues that Ontario must address:
- Income replacement
- Alternate long term markets for green recycled container glass
- A strategy for interim storage is needed until these alternate markets are found or further developed, even if they are "IYOBY" (In Your Own Back Yard).
People will not stop recycling green container glass any more than they will stop drinking imported wines, and it is inadvisable to even consider it. Remember the adage; go with the flow. It fits.
www.glassworks.org does not believe that merely throwing money at the issue will solve the problem. This is a band-aid approach. Money can pay for storage of the container glass although it is unlikely that there will be many takers. Burning up dollar bills on quick fix ideas will not create a longer-term sustainable solution, which is what is required.
